In this episode we talk about The Letters Home returning to the Public House and downtown Salinas. These guys showed up randomly on their way to a gig in San Francisco and ended up becoming an unofficial house band. We also get into Salinas's most interesting council-member and his upcoming appearance in front of a judge to face some very serious charges. Also, Oz talks about his discovery of grinding his own black pepper with peppercorn from Gold Leaf.

SUP 11-30-15 We Are Family

In this episode Oz talks about a conversation he had with an elementary school principal from the Eastside. She said that kids in Salinas go to school for three reasons. The majority of kids go to school to learn, but their is a group of kids that go to school to get the love they are not getting at home and another group of kids that goes to school to be able to eat every day. When Oz was younger he was one of the kids that went to school mainly to have something to eat and he talks about how that conversation affected him.

SUP 11-22-15 Factoter of the City

In this episode we talk about the brunch offerings at Giorgio's and why you should be spending more time there. Also, how will the filming of the TV show "COPS" affect the already strained relations between the public and the police department and how does that filming add to the perception of this city. Finally, we ask, "why did Dubbers have to change their chili recipe?".

Salinas Underground Podcast #80 Bacon 'n' Beer

In this episode Cujo talks about a bacon and beer festival in San Jose. We also discuss our experience at a laser light show we attended at the Fox that was set to the music of Pink Floyd. We also talk about people coming over from the peninsula to drink in downtown Salinas and if it will be a continuing trend.

SUP feat FoodWeb.io

In this episode we interview Sam Shreder and Stan Khrapak, creators of the website FoodWeb.io which turns every gardener into a farmer. This easy-to-use website allows you to either buy locally grown produce or sell any extra fruits or vegetables from your own garden. It is a great website that allows you to get closer to the production of your food. It also creates a novel way for community gardens to sell some produce in order to maintain themselves instead of relying on donations and government grants. 

10-25-15 The Livy Episode

In this episode we experience why this is such a great community to live in. Oz attended a fundraiser for a 4 year old girl battling a rare type of cancer that was held at Wolf Fitness. We here Livy's story from her dad and talk to one of the coaches about Salinas and the awesome people that live here. We also get into a party filled weekend in downtown Salinas.

SUP 10-18-15: Salinas is a Soccer Town

In this episode we discuss Salinas and soccer. This podcast came out of a blog that wrote about the local soccer scene and we still believe we have some of the most talented youth players in the nation. We discuss forum posts that compare Constitution Soccer Complex to Hackney Marshes in London and what the coming construction of new fields to the complex will do. Oz also lays out his idea of having a United Soccer League, third division, team playing at Rabobank Stadium.

10-11-15 SUP: Youth of the Nation

Americans under the age of 35 are going to fix what is wrong with this country. We just need the older generations to get out of the way. We are the most tech savvy and connected generation in history and we think on a global scale. Sometimes we can get a little to involved in popular culture, but it is a culture that was created and maintained by older generations. 

SUP 10-1-15 Salinas Food and Wine edition feat Jessica Mckillip

In this episode we talk about the upcoming Salinas Valley Food and Wine festival happening October 17 in downtown Salinas. To help explain all the cool things happening before and during the festival we asked one of the organizers to come on the podcast and talk about it. Jessica Mckillip, who is pretty much Ms. Oldtown, was gracious enough to come join us. One thing we are really excited for is the Oct 8 home-brewers showcase and evening farmers market on Gabilan St. This is a great episode with a lot information of yet another fun event happening in Salinas.

SUP 9-26-15 The Austin Episode

In this episode we talk about the continued change in downtown Salinas. After recording in the neighborhood for 18 months we have seen the change happen first hand and had the opportunity to meet a lot of the local business owners that are making it happen. We also talk about the amount of world-class businesses within 1 mile of each other that every person would love to have in their city. We also bring up Austin, Texas a lot. Seriously Austin. What are you doing out there in no mans land?

SUP 9-17-15 feat Steve-O from Redlight District

One of the reasons we like to record at XL Public House is, you never know who might walk in the door. This week it was our friend and Santa Cruz based musician Steve-O. Oz and Steve-O have been friends for over 18 years and has been playing music for longer, so they have a lot of stories to pass back and forth. Steve-O talks about the difference between the Santa Cruz and Salinas music scenes, his band The Redlight District and what can be found under the grates and manholes in downtown Salinas. We also play our interview we recorded with The Letters Home after their latest show at the Public House. They have very kind words to say about our city and tell us all about their nationwide tour and new album.

SUP 9-10-15: Extra, Extra Hear all about it

In this episode we discuss the recent change that has The Californian only printing 3 days a week and how bad that is for local discourse. It is the oldest continuously published newspaper in California and an excellent tool for such a small city to get its information. We also play some sound clips we recorded at the Fire and Ice party hosted by Jack Daniels at 201 Main. Some really great sounds of a bunch of people partying in downtown Salinas.

SUP 8-27-15 Conversations About Salinas

In this episode we play an interview we recorded with Watsonville Mayor Pro-Tem Felipe Hernandez. He talks with us very candidly about the reason behind the Watsonville Food Truck Festival and how their community rallied around the food trucks after a couple councilmembers tried to ban them. He also expresses his confusion around the citizens of Salinas allowing the city council to dictate how they can have fun in their city. We also talk about the recent tragic domestic violence shooting that left two people dead in south Salinas. Finally, we talk about The Californian switching over to a 3 day print cycle and how that is going to affect how people get their news in Salinas.

8-18-15 SUP with Lillie Lemon

In this episode we welcome back Monterey Electronic Pop band Lillie Lemon. We first had Lillie Lemon on the show last September when they brought some of their equipment and played live for us in the basement. This time they didn't bring any equipment but they did bring more new music from their upcoming LP (or is it EP?) which we play during the show. They are about to go on a national tour and we get the low-down about their plans.

SUP from 201 Main feat Paul Gray, Jim Romig and Steven Garza

In this episode one of our previous guests comes back on the show and this time they bring a friend from across the Atlantic. Paul "Firepower" Gray is an expert in cutting edge recovery techniques to help heal your body after workouts or just at the end of the day. He tells us an inspirational story of how he became a boxer after battling a life-threatening situation as a child. We also get to hear a great story that takes place in Paris and involves Steven Seagal repeatedly throwing Paul to the ground.

In this episode we welcome in James from our podcasting brothers, Grab a Beer and Jacket for a discussion about Salinas. We recorded this as the Italians would say "al fresco" at the Lions Den. We talk about the unfriendly business environment in the city of Salinas and how that is benefiting the surrounding cities in the valley and peninsula. Oz also goes on a rant about what a bad idea it is to build a Salinas' newest high school a mile out of town in the middle of a lettuce patch. 

SUP 7-1-15 feat a Public House Regular

In this episode our guest is one of the many regulars at the XL Public House. This is an example of a typical conversation that can be had with the locals in oldtown Salinas. We compare Spotify to Pandora, Oz explains why he is also a Jaguar, talk about the best place for fresh juice in Salinas, and many other topics. Listen and be in our world for a couple of hours.

In this episode we shout-out all of the cool local businesses where you can find us any day in downtown Salinas. We have met a lot of cool business owners in the last year and we would like to acknowledge them. We also change the mood and talk about the video that has Salinas in the national headlines. It is a difficult discussion and we tried to be as objective as possible.

SUP feat Chef Javier Plascencia

This 20-minute episode is our interview with chef Javier Plascencia, a Tijuana born chef who is trying to turn his city into a foodie destination. We talk about his new restaurant Bracero in San Diego and how we can showcase the farmworker who is sometimes a forgotten part of the food chain. We also talk about the modern food customer and how they are pushing chefs to make innovative cuisine. Finally we talk about how Mexican food joined the ranks of other cuisines on the international stage to be one of the most respected foods in the world.

SUP 6-9-15 This is Where We Grow Em

This is one of the episodes recorded at the lair. What is the lair? Well you're just going to have to listen to the older episodes to find out. In this episode we discuss why we should be so proud to live in the Salinas Valley. A lot of these newly skinny Americans are using locally grown produce to shed some pounds and eat healthier and we should be proud of that.

In this episode our guest is Jim Romig from Wolf Fitness Systems in Salinas. Their gym on John St. teaches a cutting edge way of "communicating" with your body. We talk about what the Wolf Fitness System is, how it was created, and how it is connected to the Onnit Academy in Austin, Texas. We also talk about the recently passed budget and what new projects we can see being built around town.

In this episode we talk about a day trip we took to the top of Fremonts Peak. This park is one of the least used parks in the area that offers some of the best views of Salinas Valley. We also talk about how the local media loves to sensationalize crime and in Salinas.

In this episode we continue our historical journey through Salinas. This week we talk about Salinas during WWII up to the start of the '50's. We also introduce our partnership with Wolf Fitness System of Salinas. We are planning a weekly Question and Answer segment with their coaches and trainers plus other fun stuff. In this episode we return to the lair to record a late night episode. We talk about our Indian food experience at Avatar, a restaurant everyone in Salinas needs to experience. Oz talks about his experience at the Earthquakes game and why the longest outdoor bar in North America is the best place to watch soccer in the U.S. Also a story of a crazy 12 hours of drinking, food, and bruschetta, all in downtown Salinas.

SUP 3-27-14 feat April King from SPCA of Monterey County

This episode our guest is April King from the SPCA of Monterey County. April is the community outreach coordinator, you probably have heard her on 104.3 The Hippo or Sundays on KSBW. She didn't bring any animals this time, but she teaches us all about the SPCA and their various local programs the offer. She also explains how each SPCA branch is individually operated and run strictly on donations from the community. If you ever had any questions about the SPCA or how to get involved this is the episode to listen to.

In this episode we welcome poet-turned rapper and Salinas native LaSofaQueen. She is getting ready to head out to Los Angeles on May 1-3 to compete in TeamBackpacks  Mission Underground competition. We get her Salinas story and find out how she turned her poetry into rap songs. We also discuss Cujos band Warcorpse opening up for Metalachi in Santa Cruz and your usual Salinas Underground banter.

SUP 3-9-15 Droughts and Lowriders

This week we bring you another on location edition of Salinas Underground. Isaac from Street Low Magazine was gracious enough to give us three all-access passes to last Sundays car show, and we took full advantage. Listen as we discuss the Mountie hat of what could possibly be the oldest police officer in the Salinas PD, a fruit stand with more flavors than there's fruit in the world and interview two young rap artists from the bay area. From San Jose we talk to Outrageous Karina and from Oakland we talk to Freddy Benz. Oz also goes in depth, talking about the recently approved Ferini Ranch and Harper Canyon subdivisions, that will be built around Toro Park.

In this episode we welcome the Local Urban Gardeners. They are a group from Salinas that have an idea of putting a garden and learning lab at Natividad Creek Park. We talk about the origins of the group and the goal of the learning lab. In a city like Salinas that calls itself the Salad Bowl of the world, we should have community gardens in every neighborhood.

SUP 2-16-15 Councilman In The Mirror

This episode our guest is another one of Salinas' great citizens, our friend Marcy. Marcy was raised in Salinas and currently lives in Sacramento as an advocate for people in abusive relationships. Although, not planned she is an excellent guest to talk about Oz's Newz topic of the day, the abusive actions of the Salinas City Council against its citizens. The council regularly asks the citizens of Salinas to give more. More time, more money, more appreciation, but Oz is asking them to be the change they want to be in Salinas. To have a functioning, healthy community we all need to work together and the "do as I say not as I do" attitude of the people running this town needs to stop. We also talk about the events happening the last couple of weekends of the month: Feb 21 Slayer day at the XL Public House, Feb 22 The Letters Home comes back to Salinas to do a show at the XL Public House, Feb 28 IPA fest at the XL Public House and it is John Steinbecks birthday. Salinas Underground will be giving away baked goods from a local bakery outside of the Public House.

In this episode the guys talk about the exciting things planned for Salinas in the next month. The last week of February is going to be crazy!! Cujo's metal minute focuses on the Feb 22 performance of The Letters Home at the XL Public House. Oz keeps his soccer crusade going and also explains why if you build a farm in a lake-bed you should expect it to flood from time-to-time. We also tell you how to get beer for a dollar and also how to drink more beer and only pay half the price.

Salinas Underground Podcast is back with another episode. This week Oz focuses on the buzz generated about Salinas soccer on Reddit. If you haven't heard, a group a filmmakers is making a documentary about the Alisal men's soccer team and they just released the trailer. Well that trailer ended up on the front page of the MLS subreddit and created a lot of positive buzz about Salinas and it's wealth of soccer talent. Also, the newest edition of Pozole Eat's Out has him eating at Olivia's Cafe on Station Place. The interview is in Spanish, but we give a recap after the interview en ingles for all you monolinguals out there.

This week we welcome the owner and founder of Salinas Valley Clothing Co, Eduardo Esparza. Eduardo was born and raised in Salinas an founded Salinas Valley Clothing in 2011 as a way to express pride in our city and to change the perception both by locals and outsiders alike. We also have another edition of Cujo's Metal Minute, Oz explains the new tax measures in effect in Salinas and one that might force the city back into a courtroom, and we bring you the audio of Pozole Eats Out at Mi Tierra Restaurant.

This week our guest is Salinas born and raised blues-folk musician Sean Schiveley. Yes, Salinas grows Blues musicians as well as lettuce. Cujo updates the Metal Minute..Oz answers Councilmen Barrera's question in The Californian of "where is the outrage?" over the recent violence...and the newest edition of Posole Eats Out has him venturing next door to Mi Tierra where he learns some interesting trivia about the restaurant.

1-4-15 The New Years Episode

We welcome in the new year with a new format. We have completely re-vamped the structure of our show and added a few segments. Cujo has an event segment we are calling "Cujos Metal Minute", Oz has a local news segment, and Posole has a restaurant review segment called "Posole Eats Out".
